2023/24 JH Curling Organizing Meeting Agenda/Minutes – Virtual Oct. 11, 2023
 
  1. The Derrick’s tennis/curling entrance is at the far NORTH/EAST corner of the Derrick.  All students MUST come in from the side or tennis entrance as per last year and NOT THE FRONT DOORS. Several parents were quite rude and upset with the front reception when they were told that they had to go through the side entrance.
 
  1. Waiver Forms – attached electronically to email
All Curling Rinks now require a waiver form. Students are required to have their parental guardians sign this before then can start on the rink. Adults – coaches who are on the rink must also sign the Age of Majority waiver.

  1. Average yearly participation cost per team approximately $405.21 per team plus $75/hour Instructor costs if required.
 
  1. Schools provide their own equipment. Please make sure curlers have clean shoes, proper clothing, brooms and sliders.
 
  1. Lessons/Practice:  All teams will have the opportunity to get on the Ice one time before we start league. 
 
  • Regardless of which rink you are, playing your league at, Schools can book an instructor-led session for one of the dates listed. If you prefer to have Ice time without an instructor, please indicate so when signing up.
 
  • Only schools who book instructor-led sessions, will be billed for the instruction costs ($75.00/per session).
 
  • Derrick Club lessons with Instructor: Mon Oct 30 / Wed. Nov 1 / Mon Nov. 6 / Tuesday Nov. 7.  Groupings are TBD by sign up. Sign up at end of meeting.  Lessons are from 4:15 – 5:15 pm.
 
 
  1. Review League Format:
 
  • Coaches allowed to be actively coaching etiquette as “On-Ice Stewards” for first 5 weeks of league games.  If some adult assistance is required a non-partisan coach could be requested to go on-ice and assist. Example – measurements.
 
  • 2023 Update: On Ice Stewards are allowed to coach curlers. Adults should not interfere or slow down game play, but may offer assistance to students as necessary.
 
  • Free Guard Zone, 5 Rock Rule:
2023 Update: Last year we continued to use the 4 Rock Rule. We will switch to the 5 Rock Rule. (Any stationary stone(s) belonging to the opposition located in the FGZ shall not be removed from play by the delivering team prior to the delivery of the sixth stone of the end.)
 
  • Starting/End times for leagues:  Derrick (4:15 – 5:45)
 
  • Penalty for late arrival to weekly match – 5-9 minute grace period – no penalty / 10-15 minutes the first end is forfeited and begin next end down 1-0 / Past 15 minutes – Forfeit match – can play exhibition with remaining time.
 
  • Reminder - Time Outs – Only one time out (2 minutes) per game
 
  • Clarification for Tie Breaker (in case game is tied after last end). There are NO TIES ALLOWED, please conduct a draw to the button by skips if necessary.  Sweeping is allowed only on your own team rock. The “closest to the button” rock, which is in play, breaks the tie. In “play” means rock must have made it into the “House”. Team with the Hammer in final end decides if they want to throw first or last.
 
  • Use of extra players – Extras can be rotated in during a game by moving them in when the next end occurs. Please only have 4 players on ice at a time. Extras can also be loaned to other teams who are short. Extras are not allowed to remain at Ice Level and must remain outside of rink in spectator area.
 
  • Teams with less than 3 players will forfeit game (Forfeit score will be 4-0 for opponent with enough players)
 
  • Reporting Game Results: Winning Teams Responsible for Report

  • Teams are asked to be mindful of the composition of your teams and try to encourage more female participation at your respective schools.
 
  • Below are the proposed scheduled play dates at each club. With the exception of the lessons, which are set in place, these dates are still subject to changes. Specific game schedules TBA after all teams have been confirmed at the meeting.
